The Technician Commitment (TC) is a sector-wide initiative that asks institutions and professional communities to formally recognise, support, and invest in technical professionals who underpin research and innovation. It is structured around four pillars:
- Visibility – technicians are recognised as key contributors, not invisible support
- Recognition – credit, authorship, and career value reflect real contributions
- Career Development – clear progression pathways, training, and mobility
- Sustainability – long-term workforce planning, job security, and retention
Why did the Australasian Cytometry Society support the Technician Commitment?
ACS supports the Technician Commitment because it reflects the essential role cytometry professionals play in modern research and addresses long-standing gaps in recognition, career development, and workforce sustainability.
Flow cytometry specialists contribute far beyond technical support – they design experiments, analyse complex data, ensure quality and reproducibility, and train the research community. Despite this, these contributions are not always fully recognised within current career structures.
By supporting the Technician Commitment, ACS aims to:
- Increase visibility and recognition of cytometry professionals
- Promote clear and sustainable career pathways
- Support workforce development and retention
- Advocate for the value of technical expertise in research and healthcare
