What is Cytometry?

Flow cytometry and microscopic cytometry have become invaluable tools and the methods of choice for analysis of mixtures of cells.

Cytometry Core facilities have evolved from very specialized units to very high usage platforms, central to many projects in most research institutions. While immunological studies still predominate, many genomic projects rely on GFP (green fluorescent protein), or other fluorescent proteins, readout on a daily basis. Similarly, many microbiological readouts also use flow or image cytometry. In a typical issue of Cell, half the articles feature quantitative flow or image cytometry. The proportion is even higher in immunological journals.

Also, every major diagnostic laboratory service now runs flow cytometry analysis of HIV, leukemia/lymphoma or other oncological samples.
