Cytometry Technical Support/Specialist

CENTENARY INSTITUTE OF CANCER MEDICINE AND CELL BIOLOGY is a centre of excellence in medical research affiliated with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney located in the Newtown / Camperdown area.

The Centenary Institute operates the Advanced Cytometry Facility (ACF) in collaboration with the University of Sydney. The ACF is among the best equipped Cytometry facilities in Australia, and includes the world's first ten laser flow cytometry analyser and ten laser cell sorter, Australia's first mass cytometer (CyTOF), several other flow and image cytometers. The ACF is based in two locations, namely within the Centenary Institute and in a new purpose-built facility in the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney.

A fantastic opportunity has just opened up for either:

  • A junior/intermediate flow cytometry operator who is looking to increase their level of expertise and responsibility, or
  • a keen recent graduate or technician who is looking for career direction in a scientific/technical resource facility and who has had some experience with flow cytometry.

This is a very busy role that will provide a great deal of variety and will be the challenge you are looking for. Reporting to the ACF Technical Director, your primary role will be to provide support, assistance and training to the research staff and students undertaking multi-parameter cell sorting and cell analysis (using flow, image and mass cytometers). You will interact with researchers from Centenary and the University of Sydney, as well as external users, while enjoying a wide variety of interesting and innovative work.

The successful candidate will have:

  • tertiary qualifications in cellular biology (or relevant experience)
  • enthusiasm and motivation for this exciting role,
  • a demonstrated ability to learn and develop new techniques
  • an affinity for complex instrumentation
  • excellent problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills; fine attention to detail
  • an energetic and proactive approach with the capacity for independent work
  • outstanding interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with a customer-service focus and the ability to liaise with a diverse range of people, and
  • a demonstrated commitment to Workplace Health and Safety.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in multi-colour analysis and sorting of cells on BD flow cytometers.
  • Previous experience in image cytometry.
